You may feel that this post is bit out of place. But as a university student, it does concern us, particularly for two reasons. First, many students cannot make up till university just because of such ridiculous planning. Second, we as a future of nation should try to know if this planning holds water?
I analysed my own expenditure. I am a simple university student. Just like anyone else. And by writing this I am not trying to say that all of us should be below BPL. But I want to throw some light and put my opinion that planning should be reasonable.
All the children has a right to education. There are typical costs that are needed for education. For example books, fees, transport etc. If we just account for these cost, amount of Rs 32/- will sound like a joke.
First comes the college fees. Minimum fees for engineering college is Rs 1500 per year.. This fee is only for government colleges. For SFI fees are much higher. But leave that apart. So I can say it is 1500/365= Rs 4.11 per day. Balance left = 32 - 4.11 = Rs 27.89/-. Further each typical semester has 6 subjects. Each subject has at least one text book. Each books on an average cost at least Rs 150. Per day I spend 150*6/182.5 = 5. 1 semester = 6 months. So I have taken 182.5 days precisely. Now I am left with Rs 22.89/-. Many of the colleges are located at remote places. Transport needs at least Rs 20 per day. Remember petrol price are all time high. Balance = 22.89 - 10 = Rs2.89. Now do I need to give you explanation for Rs 2.98 ?
So indirectly what planning commission suggests is....."IF YOU ARE POOR, JUST DON'T STUDY". This is a hidden message I could get! I would like to remind you that above discussion takes only academic expenditure. Still food, clothing etc are not included. Also prices I have considered are the least (impractically less). So actually academic expenditure is much more.
If you are one of those who say that scholarships are available...please think once again. Are so many scholarships available?
